Hour of Code 2020

Hour of Code is an initiative to get kids coding. Each year in December, there are lots of special events and activities from various apps and websites to encourage students to learn about computer programming. Our students use a variety of programs depending on their grade level:

Kodable

Code Spark Academy

Tynker

Lightbot

Swift Playgrounds

Dash Robots-Blockly

Most of these have free activities that you can do. Coding is an interactive activity that requires students to come up with solutions and solve problems. It is an excellent way for them to learn new skills and follow directions. To learn more about Hour of Code you can watch these videos. Click on the links below to learn more about Hour of Code.

Communicating with Your Teachers

Image result for teacher
Hello Students!

You may have questions you want to ask your teachers and they WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU! There are many ways you can reach out. You can email them using the directory at the top left of this screen. You can also request a video meeting. Some teachers are using Google Classroom and SeeSaw. Make sure you are checking into those resources if you have been using them in class.

Please make sure you are communicating with your teacher so they know you have the resources that you need to continue learning at home. If you haven't reached out to your classroom teacher, please do so soon! They are waiting to hear from you to see how you are doing.

You can also email your "specials" teachers for help or just to touch base. Remember that you have information online that will help you to complete your work at home. Look for the icon that says "Instructional Plans" that was pushed to your iPad. When you click on that you will see the schools in RSU13. Choose yours. Then click on your grade level and your teacher's folders to find learning materials for the first two weeks of home learning.

Here is the link to the Instructional Plans if you do not have your iPad. LINK

There is a tech hotline you can call if you are having problems getting your device to work, 207-466-8000. You can also email me, Mrs. Tibbetts at dtibbetts@rsu13.org. If you are at Cushing, Ash Point, or TGS email Mrs. Walsh (lwalsh@rsu13.org) or Mrs. Gould (kgould@rsu13.org). We look forward to helping you!

Central Park!

Our Chickadee nominee this week is set in Central Park and is based on the real life story of Bob Redman. Redman is an arborist but when he was a young man he built secret tree houses in Central Park. This video is a glimpse into New York City's Central Park.

We've Gone to the Dogs!

February 28, 2020
Join us at the South School Learning Commons between 2:30 and 4:00 to learn more about helping homeless animals.

At South School, our kindergarten through fourth grade students have been reading the Chickadee nominees. The last three books have been about homeless dogs.

There are lots of things we can do to help dogs and other pets find forever homes.
  1. Adopt a shelter animal instead of buying a pet.
  2. Volunteer at an animal shelter.
  3. Spay or neuter your dog or cat.
  4. Donate to your local animal shelter.
